LEI’s

Legal Entity Identifiers (LEIs) help you identify your company in financial transactions and make smarter, more reliable decisions about who to do business with.

An LEI is a unique, 20 character alphanumeric code, that enables transparency, security and trust between financial parties.

GS1 is a GLEIF (Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation) accredited Local Operating Unit (LOU), and is authorized to offer a complete LEI service, globally.

Public Policy

GS1 in Europe welcomes the Sustainable Product Regulation proposal, adopted by the European Commission on 30 March 2022. Released under the framework of the EU Green Deal, it sets the objective of becoming the first climate-neutral region by 2050.

Alcoholic Beverages

The adoption of new mandatory labelling rules will respond to consumers’ expectations and increase transparency, while harmonizing adapted communication on wines and aromatized wine products.

From November 2023, all wines and aromatized wine products marketed in the EU, regardless of their origin, will have to display the list of ingredients and the full nutrition declaration on the label or online.

This regulation modernizes the consumer information policy by allowing producers to make the newly required information available through e-labels.

Transport & Logistics

As a manufacturer, retailer, logistics service provider, or customer, you need to know exactly where your shipments of goods are at any time, where they have come from—and when and where they are due to arrive.

Identifying, capturing, and sharing information about the movement of products—and the digitalisation of everyday business processes—not only enhances interoperability between stakeholders but creates a highly efficient, sustainable, and collaborative logistics environment.

GS1 is working to achieve fully accurate, real-time visibility throughout the supply chain, from source to consumer, no matter what the mode of transport.

Unique Device Identification (UDI)

GS1 has been designated by the European Commission as the issuing entity for Unique Device Identifiers (UDIs). GS1 global standards meet the EU Commission’s criteria for the issuance of #UDIs, supporting the EU regulators in ensuring a successful implementation of the UDI system as defined by the EU Medical Device Regulation and In-Vitro Diagnostics Medical Devices Regulation (EU Regulations), and enabling manufacturers to comply with these requirements.

EU Falsified Medicines Directive

In the pharmaceutical sector, traceability means following each medicine from its production to the patient to ensure its quality and integrity. Automatic identification techniques such as barcodes are increasingly being used to ensure this traceability and to prevent the counterfeiting of medicines.

The aim of the FMD regulation is to do everything possible to establish a system of unique identification, on the basis of which each medicine can be traced from production to the patient.

Linear Barcode

One-dimensional barcodes, also called linear barcodes, are commonly found on consumer goods. They use a series of variable-width lines and spaces to encode data, including the GTIN for product identification.
  • GTIN/EAN
  • UPC: Encodes a GTIN-12 to uniquely identify a product and is most commonly used for retailer point-of-sale within North America, although it can be used globally.
  • GTIN-8: Used on small packages where the EAN-13 barcode would be too large.
  • GS1-128 Barcodes: Uses a series of GS1 Application Identifiers (AIs) to include additional data such as best before date, batch/lot number, quantity, weight, and many other attributes. It also encodes the SSCC when used on logistic labels.
  • GMN: The Global Model Number is a GS1 key used to identify a product model or product family.
  • ITF-14 Barcodes: Can only hold the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) and is suitable for printing on corrugated materials.
  • SSCC

2D Barcode

The two most widely recognized 2D codes, QR and GS1 DataMatrix, can store an extensive amount of data, including batch and lot numbers, weight, price, and expiration dates. They also provide access to promotions, product usage instructions, and recall notices—all within a single code. These codes require only a third of the space needed for a traditional barcode while containing significantly more information than an EAN/UPC barcode.
This next generation of barcode will offer more possibilities and still goes beep at the cash register!
